Why Many Nigerian Youths Are Depressed – Psychologist

Mr Enitan Oyenuga, a clinical psychologist and emotions therapist has blamed the high rate of depression and suicide amongst youths in Nigeria to emotional attachment and the falsehood of social media.

This, he said while fielding questions in an interview he had with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
Oyenuga said people have converted the original intent of social media to exaggeration of their strength and weaknesses.

It’s been observed that people on social media post areas that show their sophistication compared to their labor, they post areas that promote their significance as oppose their labor.

“The way the brain chemistry works is that for every time you go on social media, you see other people progress as a negative for yourself.

“Those yet to attain those achievements, begin to see themselves as less and not hard working enough.

“This less worth feeling could lead to depression and if not properly managed could lead to suicidal thoughts and non-acceptance by the society,” he said.

He said each time a person chooses to like or dislike a social media post, the functions of the human brain got altered.

Explaining, he said that the chemistry behind such alteration was that once the person whose picture was liked saw the ‘Like’, it altered the person’s brain for good, making the person feel elated but brought dysphoria to the person who liked the post.

“So as the dysphoria increases it alters the brain chemistry then the person starts to have suicidal adulation.

“The person’s mood starts to alter, as the mood alters the person goes through anhedonia thereby losing interest in what he or she ordinarily love to do,” Oyenuga explained.

He advised Nigerians to be conscious of one another’s attitude in order to notice psychological changes and call for assistance when needed and on time.

Adebimpe Alafe: A Love Letter to Myself

At birth, we are assigned a few things. A name, a race, a family, a biological sex. Every other part of us is a piece of the fictional identity we spend the rest of our lives defending. There is no identity I would rather defend than yours.
There are so many parts of you that I love. You are strong to the point of stubbornness, and you can laugh for hours. You have surrounded yourself with a group of people who make you impossibly happy. Your freckles radiate across your face, and you wear them with pride.
What strikes me most, however, is your ambition. I am in awe of your capacity to dream. When people ask what you want to be when you grow up, you tell them you want to change the world. I have never doubted that you could do it. When you move on from this earth, you will leave a lasting legacy. Your story will affect people besides you. The mark you cast on our world will span far and wide. I am certain of this.
Your aptitude for voice and language inspires me. You manage to transform emotions into words and pour them onto paper. When you speak, people listen. Your words make people feel things that are inexplicable—emotions that can’t be named. This is something you should be proud of.
And I understand that you are far from perfect. You have flaws; we all do. Somehow, however, you manage to be unapologetic about all parts of yourself—including these flaws. You expect people to take you are you are, and your steadfastness in your identity is awe-inspiring.
I want you to take note of the order of this letter. I called you ambitious, and strong, and talented before I called you pretty. Your character supersedes your physical appearance in all ways, but that does not mean you are not also beautiful. Your body is incredible. I am less proud of the hourglass curves you spend hours in the gym refining, and more proud of amazing things your body is capable of.
You carve sharp turns down the mountain when you ski and speak like there will never be another stage when you debate. You backpack 30 miles and become the embodiment of grit. You love everyone like they’ve never been loved before.
I know I don’t ever take the time to commend you. I spend hours pinching and poking and critiquing you. I am definitely your harshest critic.
But, hear me now, loud and clear: I love you. I think you are absolutely incredible. Every day, I think about the wonders you will accomplish in the future and the successes you have already earned. I have a feeling I’ll be by your side for a long time.
I am already impossibly proud of you.
I’ll say it again because it’s so important: I love you. I always will, even when things are tough. Keep your chin up and know I have your back.
Love,
Me.
What do you think about the letter?

World Leaders Expect Atiku Declared -PDP …Raises Cost Of Governorship Forms To N20m Peoples Democratic Party

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, yesterday, said leaders of the international community were expecting the declaration of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as president of Nigeria.
The party insisted that President Muhammadu Buhari did not win the 2019 general election.
Secondus spoke at the 86th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party in Abuja, yesterday.
He said: “The European Union election observation group, the American-based National Democratic Institute (NDI), and International Republican Institute (IRI) have confirmed the feeling of Nigerians that the election that produced President Muhammadu Buhari was marred by rampant irregularities and therefore fell below credibility standard.
“The report also lampooned the roles of security agencies during the election, and noted that the performance of security operatives during the election fell far below the acceptable international best practice.
“From these reports, therefore, it’s now obvious even globally that the will of Nigerian voters freely expressed on 23 February, 2019, when they came out in their numbers and voted for our candidate Atiku Abubakar was massively rigged and thwarted. This clearly is the verdict of the world leaders, who are also watching us as we proceed at the election tribunal.
“This government in all sincerity cannot take this country to their so-called next level. Maybe, as witnessed in the last four years, they will take us to the next level of insecurity, hunger and hopelessness.
“The situation is precarious and it entails that all hands must be on deck to retrieve our stolen mandate and save this country. To do that, we must return to God to ask that the will of Nigerian people freely expressed on February 23, 2019, prevails.”
Secondus also revealed how Ahmad Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila emerged as Senate President and House of Representatives Speaker, respectively.
He alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) bribed lawmakers to ensure its candidates won.
The national chairman said while the executive arm was having their wish in the 9th National Assembly, PDP as the main opposition party was “very uncomfortable that the level of alleged corruption that preceded the emergence of the leadership is capable of undermining the desired robust legislative activities”.
Secondus said: “Having ‘purchased’ the leadership of the parliament, we expect the cabals to now fully take over and dictate the show at the legislature. We have even seen the first sign of what is to come when the APC group in the Senate killed a motion to debate the June 12 speech of the imperial President.
“Only a conquered parliament with credibility challenge can shy away from discussing a major address of a President just sworn into office, but that is a sign of what is to come when choosing legislative leadership is heavily monetized by a regime that claims to be fighting corruption.
“The bazaar that took place during the election of National Assembly leaders clearly gives a picture of the anti-corruption status and how the APC has become home for looters. Just last week Nigerians witnessed how some corruption charges involving APC chieftains were withdrawn from the EFCC and handed over to the Attorney General for final dropping.
“Permit me at this juncture, dear leaders, to express the disappointment of our party on the embarrassing roles of some of our party members at the National Assembly during the election of their leaders.
“Party loyalty demands that you stick to your party at any given situation. When personal interest clash with party interest, personal should drown into that of the party, that’s what real democrats are expected to do.”
Meanwhile, ahead of the November 16 governorship elections in Kogi and Bayelsa states, the PDP has pegged the cost of its nomination forms at N20 million.
The form, which sold for N5million during the 2019 general election would now cost more given what the party described as the rising cost of printing and logistics.
The decision was taken at the 86th emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the PDP which held at the party’s national secretariat, Abuja, yesterday.

How A Fake Nigerian Doctor Performed 500 Operations And Caused The Death Of 46 Patients

Ibrahim Mustapha, a fake doctor and principal medical officer of Cottage hospital, Fufore in Adamawa state, has been arrested by the Department of State Services for killing patients in the cause of his fake practice.

He is said to have performed over 500 surgical operations causing the death of about 46 patients from January to May 2019.

Parading the fake doctor in Yola on Thursday, DSS Director in the state, Bola Olori, said the DSS has, "effected the arrest of one Ibrahim Mustapha, who operated illegally as a PMO in Fufore Cottage hospital, Fufore local government area of Adamawa state".

Mr. Olori said a preliminary investigation revealed that Mustapha holds National Board of Technical Education (NBTE) certificate, an equivalent of Senior Secondary School certificate or High School.

The fake surgeon confessed to forging MBBS credentials according to the DSS but denied causing the death of any patient throughout his career until his arrest.

"Yes, I've forged the documents as stated by the DSS boss and also done both major and minor surgical operations, including caesarian section, altogether more than 500 surgeries without causing the death of any of my patients as claimed."

But the DSS said, "He perfected the illicit act in Gombe where he worked as a ward attendant in several clinics. He was aided by a practicing doctor who gave him sample copies of his NECO results, MBBS of Bayero University Kano, NYSC Discharge certificate and Medical and Dental Council if Nigeria, annual registration license.

"The suspect subsequently gained employment into the Adamawa state Hospital Management Board in October 2015 as a doctor and rose to the post of PMO, serving at both the Cottage hospital Mayo-Belwa and Fufore."

Mustapha ran out of luck when he attended visa interview as a potential medical team member for the 2019 hajj operations.

He was exposed by a man who knew him in Gombe as a ward attendant in an undisclosed clinic.
